Robert "Bob" Curtice McCain, of Pompton Plains, formerly of New Providence, died at his home on July 28, 2010. He was 86.
Born in Orange on July 26, 1924 to Curtice Shaw and Harriet Wilmena Baker. Mr. McCain grew up in Maplewood, and graduated from Columbia High School in 1943. The family was prominent in Maplewood, with Baker Street being named after his maternal grandfather, Harry Jackson Baker, the owner of the first general store and post office in Maplewood. Shortly after his High School graduation, Mr. McCain enlisted in the US Army. He served in the European Theater with the 100th Division, 399th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, F Company. He was awarded a Bronze Star for valor in combat for his participation in the March 15, 1945 battle in Germany. Many of his company were killed that day. He was also awarded two battle stars for Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was a saxophone player for the 399th All Combat Infantry Dance Band. This band was established at Fort Bragg, NC under the direction of Frank Hanshaw Jr. prior to the soldiers shipping overseas in the fall of 1944. The band was brought back together in Europe as the war was ending in May of 1945. The band made ten recordings for the Armed Forces Network, which were broadcast throughout Europe. They traveled throughout Europe playing at various venues to include the Stuttgart Opera House and two of Hitler's concert halls. They entertained troops until they were discharged from duty in March of 1946.
Upon his return from WWII, Mr. McCain entered Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, and graduated with a BS in Printing Administration in 1950.
Mr. McCain was a printing salesman, retiring in the late 90's from L.P. Thebault Company, headquartered in Parsippany. Prior to his retirement, he coordinated printing of the work of Ansel Adams in the 1950s, printing of the pictures of the first heart transplant surgery and printing of the Cartier catalog.
On July 12, 1951, Bob married Joan Marie Reymann; they were married for 44 years.
He had a lifelong love of music, and was one of the founding members of Reeds, Rhythm And All That Brass, a popular NJ charity swing band. He played saxophone and served as Band Manager and Treasurer for many years. He also gave volunteer saxophone concerts at the VA, area nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
Bob's faith in God through his Lord Jesus Christ was an essential part of his life. He was an active, long-time member at Long Hill Chapel in Chatham Twp., where he ran the tape ministry for 39 years. He was also a 23-year member of Bible Study Fellowship, which met at Millington Baptist Church. During his time in BSF, he served as Discussion Leader and Class Administrator.
He was predeceased by his wife Joan. He was a loving father to Keith McCain and his wife Kelly of North Kingstown, RI; David McCain and his wife Jennifer of Johnson City, TN; Sue McCain of Montpelier, VT, and Jody McCain of Summit. He was a devoted grandfather to Kevin McCain and Brandon Mann and Matthew, Katherine & Colleen McCain.
Bob is remembered by family and friends as an upbeat, encouraging, and loving man.
