Debra Gail Brennan-Nemetz passed away in her home in Chatham, NJ on June 28, 2010. She was 59.
Debra was born on May 10, 1951, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, where her father was a consultant to the governor. She spent her early years on a farm near Harrisburg, PA, attending one of the last one-room schools in the state. When she was in the fourth grade, she enjoyed being the First Lady of Pennsylvania for a day when she and Governor Lawrence lit the state Christmas trees during the holiday program held in the rotunda of the capitol.
In 1964, Debra and her family moved to Newtown, PA, where she attended Council Rock High School. There she was active in basketball – she captained a team called Brennan's Bombers – and field hockey. She was president of Future Teachers of America, participated in the school's first Advanced Placement classes, and was elected Sports Queen her senior year.
She enrolled in Wittenberg College in the fall of 1969, continuing her love of sports by playing intramural soccer. Debra joined the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and received their scholarship award her sophomore year. She became dedicated to teaching and taught a freshman English class her senior year. She also taught an evening class for local senior citizens.
After college, Debra returned to Bucks County where she taught at a private kindergarten in Doylestown, PA. She also worked in several interesting shops in New Hope where she displayed her artistic talent by creating unique and stylish candles and jewelry.
In 1990, she moved to Chatham, NJ with her husband and daughter, and became the office manager for her husband's landscaping business. Debra was passionate about the woods and wildlife, and often volunteered at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center. She loved camping, hiking, and leading her daughter's Girl Scout troop. Debra was a beautiful woman inside and out. She truly will be missed.
Survivors include her parents Margaret and Thomas Brennan of Newtown, PA; her daughter Kathleen Margaret Brennan of Brooklyn, NY; her brother and sister-in-law Mark Kevin and Jill C. Brennan, and their daughters Margaret and Elizabeth, of Atlanta, GA; and her sister and brother-in-law Laurie Kathleen and Paul W. Smith of Wayne, PA.
Survivors also include ex-husbands Joseph G. Nemetz of Basking Ridge, NJ and Joseph A. Traub of Southampton, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or any other animal shelter in Debra's name.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church, 4 Waldron Pl. in Summit, NJ, on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 1:00 pm.
