Lillian Marguerite Behre O'Brien, 73, of Gillette, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. She was raised in New Providence, NJ, in the house built by her paternal grandfather, Carl W. Behre, who had emigrated from Germany and established a rose-growing business on Passaic Street, New Providence.
Following her graduation from Bayley-Ellard High School in Madison, she received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Montclair State College. Lillian taught fifth grade in the New Providence public school system, then returned to school to embark on a career in nursing and nurse recruiting. She was honored with an Exceptional Service Award by the Hospital News of NJ, and was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in American Nursing by the Society of Nursing Professionals.
Lillian led a joyful life. She was proud of her Irish heritage, continually supportive of her beloved Notre Dame football team, and a devoted friend to many.
Lillian loved Long Hill Township, her home for over 45 years. She was a member of the Long Hill Township Historic Preservation Committee, a volunteer at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and had previously served on the Township Board of Education. She was an active member of the St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Stirling.
Nothing brought more joy to Lillian than her family. She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Daniel K. O'Brien, their four children and ten grandchildren. These include Kevin O'Brien of El Cerrito, CA, Kathleen O'Brien Conway of Salisbury, MD, Patrice O'Brien Wrape of Parker, CO, and Maureen O'Brien Pearson of West Chester, PA. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Behre Boyle, and two brothers, Charles and Joseph Behre. Lillian is survived by her brother, Roger Behre, of Seven Lakes, NC.
Visiting hours will be held from 3-8pm on Friday, July 30, at the Wm. A. Bradley and Son Funeral Home in Chatham, NJ. A funeral Mass will be held 10am on Saturday, July 31 at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Stirling, followed by interment at the St. Vincent De Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge www.friendsofgreatswamp.org
